Black Sesame: An Underrated Superfood

Due to their wonderful health properties, black sesame is a go-to superfood within ancient medicinal practices such Chinese medicine and Ayurveda. Black sesame is recommended for strengthening the body, building healthy blood and chi, and promoting longevity. The seeds are rich with B vitamins, iron, calcium, zinc, copper and magnesium - which help nourish the nervous system, blood, bones, and skin. The copper content of black sesame in particular may be the reason why the seeds are recommended to help reverse or prevent the hair from going grey prematurely. A compound within sesame known as sesamin has been found to help lower bad LDL cholesterol levels as well as help protect the liver. They also contain lignans which act as antioxidants, preventing free radical damage. Source unhulled black sesame for the most nutritional punch.
